Are European towbars compatible with Australian vehicles?

European towbars can be compatible with Australian vehicles, but they must comply with Australian Design Rules and standards. While some European towbars meet these requirements, others may only be certified to European standards and not suitable for use in Australia without modification or additional certification.

How do European towbars differ from standard towbars?

European towbars often feature a swan neck design where the towball and ball mount are a single, integrated piece. They are typically more compact and aesthetically pleasing, with some models like the Invisihitch offering a concealed design. European towbars are designed to comply with strict European safety standards, which can differ from those in Australia.

What vehicles are best suited for European towbars?

European towbars are generally well-suited for smaller vehicles and those where aesthetics are a priority, such as luxury cars. They are ideal for vehicles that require a clean look, as many European towbars can be detached or concealed when not in use.

Can European towbars be used for towing heavy loads?

European towbars are generally designed for towing capacities ranging from 3,000 to 3,500 kg, making them suitable for moderate towing needs. However, they may not be ideal for very heavy loads, especially compared to some heavier-duty towbars designed for larger vehicles and trailers. Always check the specific towing capacity of the towbar and ensure it matches your towing requirements.

European Towbars & Tow Hitches Melbourne

European Towbars

With every part of your car, SUV or truck, you want the assurance it’s built to strict safety and performance standards — and your towbar is no exception. European towbars are made to some of the tightest quality regulations in the world.

Built to Directive 94/20/EC + Australian Design Rules — road-legal & highway-rated
Hidden & removable options to suit your vehicle
Premium brands: Ecohitch, Invisihitch and more
Coverage from Audi to Volvo

At Five Star Towbars we fit a quality selection of Euro towbars matched to your exact make and model. Every European towbar we install meets the standards above — which means it’s road-legal here and rated to tow safely at highway speed.

InvisihitchTow Bars

The Invisihitch European hidden towbar (by Execuhitch) rethinks how a towbar is fitted. Instead of sitting behind the bumper, it mounts vertically up and behind the bumper bar — so once the ball mount is removed, the towbar is virtually invisible.

Virtually invisible when not in use — keeps your vehicle’s clean lines
Nothing protruding to bark your shins on
Manual or automatic ball-mount attachment
Accessories: bike racks, four- or six-hole bumper-protector ball mounts

It’s the ideal choice if you want towing capability without altering the look of a premium European car. Our team fits the Invisihitch to spec, so it sits perfectly and performs safely.

I would like to say a BIG thank you to Five Star Towbars, Luke Anthony and Kane. I had a Redarc Tow-Pro Elite Electric Trailer Brake Controller system installed on my car. They were right on time they're professionalism and customer service is top notch and nothing but the best 👌. When i aked Luke how long it'll take a couple of hours and that was exactly how long it took. Anthony and Kane took great care with my CLUBSPORT and ran through everything with me to familiarize the system and if i had any follow ups don't hesitate to contact them 😊. I highly recommend Five Star to anyone looking at having anything trailer wise done on their vehicle 😀.

Response from the owner:Thanks Peter, we are thrilled you had such a great experience with Luke, Anthony and Kane. We appreciate you sharing the details and recommendation, and we will pass your kind words on to the team. If you have any follow ups about the system, we are here to help.

Highly recommend FiveStar Towbars. Luke was great to deal with and organised the job, and Mark, the installer, was extremely professional. My Hyundai Kona has a build date right around the model changeover, which meant the towbar originally supplied turned out not to be the correct fit. Mark arrived at the agreed time, identified the issue straight away, then went to another supplier to source the correct towbar, came back and completed the installation without any fuss. Once finished, he connected up the portable test trailer lights and tested all the lights to show me everything was working correctly. Excellent service from start to finish, professional installation, great problem-solving, and the convenience of having the whole job done at my home. Very happy with the result and would highly recommend Luke, Mark and the FiveStar Towbars team.

Response from the owner:Thanks Jeff, we’re thrilled you had such a positive experience. We’ll pass your kind words on to Luke and Mark — they’ll be pleased to hear this. Glad Mark could source the correct towbar, complete the install at your home and confirm everything was working perfectly. Thank you for recommending FiveStar Towbars; we appreciate your support and are here if you need anything in the future.
