Towbars

Finding the right type of towbar for your vehicle will depend on your application this is why seeking expert advice from FiveStar Tow bars will help you navigate the options available. Whether you’re towing a rubbish-filled trailer, or your caravan on a trip around Australia, or your beloved horses on a float your tow bar needs to comply with Australian Design Rules (ADR) standards and suit your towing requirements. No matter what type of vehicle you own, whether it’s a deluxe European vehicle or a domestic favourite, we stock and install a variety of tow bars from the best brands including:

Hayman Reese
BTA Towbars And Accessories
Tow Link
West falia

All towbars are Australian Design Rules (ADR) tested, compliant and approved, ensuring the best in quality standards.

Choosing the right type of tow bar

Choose from the best range of fixed, removable and retractable tow bars in Melbourne. When selecting a towbar for your vehicle, it’s important to select one that has the appropriate weight capacity for its primary purpose. Standard models with a bolt on tongue are best suited to relatively light towing of weights up to 1250kgs; a light trailer. Heavy duty hitch models can pull much greater weights including horse floats, caravans and boats, thanks to the removable hitch and receiver pin design. Australian law prevents you from towing a weight that is greater than the smallest acceptable weight capacity for both your car and your towed vehicle. This means that if your car has a towing capacity of 1250kgs and your trailer is compliance rated to 900kgs GVM (Gross Vehicle Mass), the maximum you can tow is 900kgs. FiveStar Towbars will ensure you receive five star service and advice with all your tow bar needs. Give us a call today on 1300 787 008 for a free quote, our mobile installation means we are always near you no matter how far we come to you anywhere in Melbourne and surrounding suburbs. I would like to say a BIG thank you to Five Star Towbars, Luke Anthony and Kane. I had a Redarc Tow-Pro Elite Electric Trailer Brake Controller system installed on my car. They were right on time they're professionalism and customer service is top notch and nothing but the best 👌. When i aked Luke how long it'll take a couple of hours and that was exactly how long it took. Anthony and Kane took great care with my CLUBSPORT and ran through everything with me to familiarize the system and if i had any follow ups don't hesitate to contact them 😊. I highly recommend Five Star to anyone looking at having anything trailer wise done on their vehicle 😀.

Response from the owner:Thanks Peter, we are thrilled you had such a great experience with Luke, Anthony and Kane. We appreciate you sharing the details and recommendation, and we will pass your kind words on to the team. If you have any follow ups about the system, we are here to help.

Highly recommend FiveStar Towbars. Luke was great to deal with and organised the job, and Mark, the installer, was extremely professional. My Hyundai Kona has a build date right around the model changeover, which meant the towbar originally supplied turned out not to be the correct fit. Mark arrived at the agreed time, identified the issue straight away, then went to another supplier to source the correct towbar, came back and completed the installation without any fuss. Once finished, he connected up the portable test trailer lights and tested all the lights to show me everything was working correctly. Excellent service from start to finish, professional installation, great problem-solving, and the convenience of having the whole job done at my home. Very happy with the result and would highly recommend Luke, Mark and the FiveStar Towbars team.

Response from the owner:Thanks Jeff, we’re thrilled you had such a positive experience. We’ll pass your kind words on to Luke and Mark — they’ll be pleased to hear this. Glad Mark could source the correct towbar, complete the install at your home and confirm everything was working perfectly. Thank you for recommending FiveStar Towbars; we appreciate your support and are here if you need anything in the future.

Types of tow bars FAQs

What is the best type of towbar for my vehicle?

The best type of towbar for your vehicle depends on your specific towing needs and preferences. There are several types of towbars available, including:

Fixed Flange Towbar: Cost-effective and suitable for most towing needs. It allows for additional accessories like cycle carriers but can affect the vehicle’s aesthetics.
Detachable Swan Neck Towbar: Offers a cleaner look as it can be removed when not in use, reducing the risk of injury and avoiding interference with parking sensors.
Retractable Towbar: Combines the benefits of fixed and detachable towbars, offering convenience and a clean look when not in use.
Invisihitch Towbars: Designed to be completely hidden when not in use, maintaining the vehicle’s original appearance. These towbars are ideal for those who want a seamless look without compromising on functionality.

How do I know what weight my towbar can handle?

The weight your towbar can handle is determined by its Maximum Towed Mass (MTM), which varies depending on whether the trailer has brakes. This information is typically found on the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) plate, which provides the vehicle’s towing capacity. It is crucial to ensure that the combined weight of the trailer and its contents does not exceed this limit.

Are towbars universal, or do they need to be vehicle-specific?

Towbars are not universally compatible; they need to be vehicle-specific to ensure proper fit and functionality. While some universal kits are available, they may not offer the same benefits as vehicle-specific kits, which are designed to integrate seamlessly with the vehicle’s existing systems and maintain warranty protection.
